What is Street Fighter 3: Third Strike?
Third Strike is the third edition of the Street Fighter 3 series, and the last dedicated Street Fighter game released before IV was announced. It had a dedicated competitive following in all major areas of the world and can be found wherever fighting games are played.
Why the PS2 version, the only local version is the Dreamcast version isn't it?
This is correct. Third Strike has NTSC releases for Playstation 2 with the Street Fighter Anthology and by itself, as well as an X-Box version. The PS2 version is yet much more common to enthusiasts of the game thanks to the consoles widespread userbase, and there is much more variety of controller options for it. Theoretically there are adapters for people that wish to play with X-Box and Dreamcast controllers. Practically everyone already uses either Dual Shocks or Playstation 1/2 compatible arcade sticks.
What makes Third Strike special, that Couch Warriors chose it in it's lineup?
This is a valid question for Third Strike, since it is readily playable at Bluehouse in the city and the community Ozhadou exists for it. There has been demand for this game ever since Couch Warriors started at Latrobe University in early 2007, where this core community mostly consists of regulars of the Therapy arcade there. Also, we've found that there is a core group of fighting game fans who simply prefer to use pads over sticks. It's also quite likely some prefer not to commit money or face opponents too far out of their league, as our group has quite a few people just picking up the game.
What competitions are held for this game?
The standard tournament format used for Third Strike is the double elimination method, which is basically a knockout format where each competitor is eliminated when they have lost two games, effectively giving everyone a second chance.
There is a point scoring system associated with each tournament which goes toward deciding the seasonal winner and seeding the big finale at the end of the season. Currently the folks running the tournaments will be Loki, Nick and THK.
Also popular in the last few rounds, and when we have time is the game Armies. Armies takes the winner and runner up for the tournament and makes them captain where they choose from people who participated in the tournament, and they play and knockout people from the other army in the reverse order that they were picked. It gives newer players the chance to play against people of similar skill and the veterans to get behind them, give them encouragement to help their team win. Alternatively for fun we sometimes play low tier tournaments in Third Strike, to give some of the lesser used characters some love... or really for the lulz.
What controllers do we use?
For the most part it is either PS2 compatible arcade sticks of the dual shock. Most people already have their preference, and should you have an adapter with another controller that you want to use then we're cool with that. If you have no real preference and you are just starting out, then I fully encourage using the arcade stick as it's likely to be used across all platforms where we choose to play these games, not to mention being able to play on the cab at Bluehouse in the city, or Playtime in Box Hill.
Where can I learn more about this game?
There are a few useful topics on Third Strike on our forums here. Alternatively you can talk to regulars on our IRC channel at irc.mergo.net in #couchwarriors.
Probably the best source for Third Strike related information is on SRK, however those wanting to really get good at this game should head over to Ozhadou, say hello on the forums, play at Bluehouse and get to know the regulars. If you're starting from scratch however then definitely find a character that you can get a feel for and come play some casuals with us, as most people will be willing to advice if you want to learn.
