The hype train for Battle Arena Melbourne next month is picking up a ton of steam with each passing week, and we’ve got a couple more announcements here which are sure to help fuel that engine!
Not only has the list of fighting games represented in the tournament schedule grown significantly since the initial announcement, but CouchWarriors have now confirmed the return of the “BAM Bounties” competition – offering special prizes to anyone who can take down the top-ranked players of CouchWarriors League in their favorite game.
There’s a very special atmosphere around the Australian FGC this month – an excitement nobody has felt for several long, major-less years. The twelfth-ever Battle Arena Melbourne finally has a scheduled date and venue, and the biggest international esports tournament on the national calendar is now open for player registration!
Taking place at Melbourne Exhibition Centre from May 13th to May 15th, BAM is a celebration of everything happening in fighting games, right in the heart of the city’s renowned CBD. It’s also the heart of the CouchWarriors League tournament circuit, offering a huge injection of ranking points alongside other prizes and competitions. Attracting champions both domestic and international across a huge range of games, this is the pinnacle of competition for every player (and spectator!) in OCE.

Sunday, July 11th saw a year of pent-up competitive energy unleashed from a highly unusual venue. Inflation Nightclub and Entertainment Complex has been a party fixture on Melbourne’s King Street for decades, but they’d never seen anything quite like the crowd of 240+ FGC diehards hollering over the noise of the venue to celebrate a knockout blow.
With a brief window to take advantage of lowered COVID restrictions but no way to facilitate a full-sized major, an event was planned to carry on the spirit of BAM in the best available venue, and thus we got to enjoy #BANC – Battle Arena Nightclub 2021.
Get hype! The biggest AusFGC news of the year is the biggest AusFGC event of the year: BAM 2021.
Battle Arena Melbourne is making its comeback in 2021. Held from July 9th-11th, #BAM12 will feature the peak of competitive play for fighting games across Australia as part of the CouchWarriors League, as well as a rare chance for our top talent to battle world-class opposition. Expanding the gaming on offer, alongside BAM will be ITZ Gaming PC LAN (more on that below)! BAM’s status as Australia’s top Major on the official circuits brings together players and broadcasters from all sorts of games, and CouchWarriors are going in even harder on that big-tent ethos with this year’s event. Whether you count yourself among the hardcore competitors, niche game specialists, casual fans, artists, cosplayers, or game developers, #BAM12 has something to offer.

After a massively successful debut last year, the return of Phantom was arguably one of the most anticipated tournaments for 2020. This year the Smash-focused major was again held at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney, with tournament brackets running on March 7th and 8th.
Phantom 2020 also had the honour of being the first Major to hand out double-points for the newly-launched CouchWarriors League. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone across the AUNZ FGC! 2019 has been a year of big tournament turnouts and big tournament performances, capped off by the year-ending mini major CouchWarriors Crossup. Full results from the event have already been reported here, but there’s so much more that goes on at any event like this than those results can really tell.
To make sure we can celebrate everything great about our community and the events we put together, this will be the first of a string of tournament recaps focusing on the best moments, images and personal achievements from those events. THE SEASON FINALE
The BAM Path to EVO has continued to raise the stakes and bring a little continuity to tournaments in its 2nd season. Having shared leaderboards for MK11, SFV, Tekken 7 and Smash Ultimate across multiple regions has also helped spice up the interstate competition, which finally came to a head at this final event of the season. CouchWarriors sponsored travel for the Season 2 winners from interstate, who then had to run the gauntlet of local Victorian killers to make good on their titles.Read more
The second edition of CouchWarriors Crossup, our end-of-year Mini-Major, was held December 14th at Bayview on the Park in Melbourne. CWC2 marked the finale for Season 2 of the BAM Path to EVO! The top ranked players in each of Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11 and Smash Ultimate received sponsored flights to the event to compete. The final standings can be viewed here. Note that NZ players Daniel “Kanga|Wowzer” Cossington (Tekken) and Reagan “S-NET|GhostChips” Kelly (SFV) finished on top in their respective games, but declined the prize.

Baxter at BAM, the first ANZ Champion in Dragon Ball FighterZ
The biggest fighting game release this year has been Dragon Ball FighterZ! Taking the community by storm, DBFZ has been an immediate hit as a tournament title. The debut major for DBFZ in Australia, BAM10, saw 122 entrants, as VSDS Baxter took home the first championship in a thrilling final.
Now, CouchWarriors is excited to announce we will be hosting a Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour Saga Event – one of only seven in the world. Find out more about Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour here https://dbfzworldtour.com/
This major global fighting game event will take place at our Ranking Battle Season finals, and because it’s a special occasion, we are creating a new event. CouchWarriors Crossup.
CouchWarriors Crossup will take place over two days, December 15-16, 2018. We will have more announcements around this new major event in the fighting game and esports calendar in the weeks to come.
This event is sure to attract the greatest players from around the world – expect to see top players from across Japan and South East Asia and perhaps even further afield, to battle against our local champions to claim the seventh Dragon Ball and a direct qualification into the World Finals in January.
That’s right, the winner of the event gets a free trip to the DBFZWT Finals! Alongside the incredible opportunity to go to World Finals, there is a $5,000 Prize Pool for Dragon Ball FighterZ
This will be the first tournament for the major Switch title – Claim the title of inaugural champion! Stay tuned for more announcements.
